Chinnor Village Centre events

Below are details of Chinnor Village Centre events and activities.

Festive Victorian  Market – Saturday 26th November, 11am to 3pm

Highlights – carols by choirs – Mill Lane School Choir and Village Voices; Santa’s grotto; letters to Santa; photo booth; face painting; cake decorating competitions; refreshments; cake stall; presents and present-wrapping; tombola; raffle; and many more stalls of festive cheer. (Donations of items for the Raffle or Tombola would be welcome, please drop them off at the Village Centre.)

The Coffee Shop will be open to provide refreshments such as hot drinks, bacon rolls and sausage rolls.

Santa’s Sleigh Send-off Sunday 4th December, 4.00 – 5.30pm.

Join us as we launch Father Christmas and his sleigh for this year’s fundraising journey around the village. The launch event will be at the Village Centre and will include carol singing, refreshments and games. Please join us to share in the festive mood.

Santa’s Sleigh Rides Out!

For the two weeks after the launch, the sleigh will be touring all around the village, accompanied by our elves, from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm on weekday evenings from Monday 5th December to Friday 16th December. We will publicise the route where we can, but please note there may be times we have to vary the route for reasons beyond our control. We will be very grateful for any donations you may be able to give.

Coffee Shop Christmas Lunches

These are very popular. Please phone to book your lunch as soon as possible, directly with Sue Collins, Coffee Shop Manager, on 01844 353733.

Lunch dates are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5th December to 16th December but note some are sold out already.

 

Burns Night 2023

Burns Night next year is Wednesday 25th January so we will hold our Burns Night on Friday 27th January at the centre.

 

Diary notes

Christmas Holiday:  The Village Centre will close for the Christmas holiday period – the last day we will be open in 2022 will be Thursday 22nd December. The centre will re-open on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.

Remembrance Sunday Services

Services are being held in Chinnor, Aston Rowant, Crowell and Sydenham.

Annual parish walk 8 January

After the huge success of last year’s New Year’s walk we are extending an open invitation for Chinnor Pump and Aston Rowant Parish Notes readers to join us again. Exact route to be decided according the conditions underfoot.

It’ll be held on Sunday 8 Jan 10.00hrs, departing from Kingston Blount Village Hall car park, OX39 4SW.

It’ll be a leisurely 6.5 miles. All the circular walk will be within Aston Rowant Parish. Please wear walking boots and bring a snack. We will aim to finish by 13.00hrs. All welcome.

No dogs except guide dogs please. Booking not required and no charge. And no one will be left behind! We will have a good backmarker!

Walk organised jointly by Aston Rowant Parish Council and Thame and Wheatley Ramblers.

Any old parish memorabilia?

Di Eaton and Jan Gooders have accumulated historical recordings of life in the parish over the past 30 years or so. They have amassed a large quantity of notes and artefacts found in the area and people’s gardens which may or may not have historical value (decorative bottles etc. and even a possible medieval christening ring). But along with many notes and jottings, they have cassette tapes of old parishioners talking about their lives.

They feel that these all needed to be properly archived and displayed in the parish rather than given to Thame Museum where they would never be seen again by those living here.

They’ve asked if parishioners have any archive material that could be displayed too.

Rescheduled defibrillator training

The parish council has rearranged the second defibrillator training event that was postponed from Thursday 8 September following the death of HM The Queen.

The training will now take place on Thursday 10 November at 1930hrs in Kingston Blount Village Hall.

All are welcome to attend this free event and it should take no more than one hour.

Rugged Radnage 5K and 10K race

Rugged Radnage 5K and 10K race is being held on Sunday 20th November.

The Rugged Radnage is organised by Radnage C of E School and raises money for the school. This is the 12th year the race has be organised.

Be careful where you paddle!

Mike Eaton, who curates Fiveways Corner, has sent in two images and some video of a Signal Crayfish lurking in the stream at Fiveways.

Apparently it’s an American import that was introduced to the UK and which has now overrun the UK’s native species with smaller claws. This one seems to be immune to the high levels of phosphates and nitrates that are in the stream.

Regardless, a nip from it will hurt. You have been warned.

FTTP Update

It’s been a while since I last gave an update on the status of FTTP in the parish and that’s because there’s not much – irritatingly – to say.

You’ll have hopefully seen coils of black fibre cable and boxes go up on telegraph poles. Early August there was a ‘road closure’ in Aston Rowant for duct work on behalf of Openreach.

I’ve been pressing my contact for more information. In response he has said that the “build plan is all still going ahead. Work continues on the exchange and fibre spine in readiness for the fibre rollout for the area.” He added that “a lot of the work starts outside of the immediate area. Hence why residents won’t see activity.”

He also noted that with many Community Fibre Partnerships all closing at a similar point in time Openreaach is somewhat under the kosh.

My contact’s gut feel is for completion sometime Q2 2023. It’s not ideal, but you’ll recall that I noted a few months ago that we were lucky to get our scheme approved before the funding round closed… if we hadn’t, we’d be waiting until at least 2025/6.

We’re going to have to be patient.

Lastly, if you were one of the residents who, for whatever reason, didn’t receive or validate a gigabit voucher, don’t worry – you’ll still be able to join FTTP when it rolls out, without penalty.

Public meeting in village hall

Around 80 members of the public attended a meeting held at Kingston Blount Village Hall on Tuesday 4 October to discuss the possibility of development in Kingston Blount.

The meeting heard a presentation from Strutt and Parker who were seeking views on the potential development. Their presentation is below.
