Dear local residents,
I wanted to take the opportunity to apologise, and provide context, for some of the activity at the cricket club on the bank holiday Monday (5th May).
We were offered the opportunity to hire the ground for a university six-a-side tournament. The event was expected to bring in circa £5000 of revenue for the club, which it did, and as a small community sports club these are funding opportunities you simply can’t turn down. Having extensive experience from our Rowachella festival, we didn’t everything we could to set the event up for success. This included; ensuring students were dropped/collected by bus, closing off the pavilion for access, insisting the organisers provided security, first aid and temporary toilet facilities. We also ensured the organisers did a clear up in the subsequent two days to the event.
Unfortunately both the security and toilet facilities were not sufficient, and neither was their clear up attempt. This resulted in some attendees, none of which were members of the club, using bushes as toilets and discarding litter along the path. We know how beautiful the local area is, and how much pride the community has in it. We do too. Clearly the area around the cricket club wasn’t treated with the necessary levels of respect on the day.
Since the event, we have done our own clear up and ensured any litter has been collected. We’ve also done an extensive review of the event, and if we are to hire the ground for any further events of this nature we’ll be sure to ensure the necessary security and toilet provisions are in place. Lesson learnt.
Thanks and apologies again,
Josh Smith
