ARCC this weekend

Thursday, 25th Jul 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein
The most important message from the club this week is that the annual weed treatment, subject to the weather, is confirmed for Sunday 28th July. Signs will be put up, but please be careful – especially if you are walking a dog.
In terms of cricket this weekend, the first team are away at Oxford Downs and the third team are at Bledlow Ridge. At home we have the second team against Cumnor first team, starting at 12.30, and the fourth team are playing Waddesdon second on the bottom pitch.
Junior training with the bar and BBQ are on as usual on Friday night.

Large solar farm proposed

Tuesday, 23rd Jul 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

A large solar farm is likely to be proposed for a site adjacent to the parish – either side of the M40 from Nethercote to Salt Lane in Postcombe.

It’s not an official planning application yet. However, the firm behind the site recently held a consultation for the public. The documents from the presentation are below. Please take a moment to look at them and if appropriate, send a comment.

In essence, while the parish council is supportive of eco-friendly ways of generating power, it voted to object to what is currently being proposed.
Scale – at 83 hectares it’s too big.
Location – it’s too close to the Chilterns AONB and far too visible to walkers.
Proximity – it’s too close to housing in Postcombe.
Further, there’s another solar array a few miles further north in Tetsworth that is being built. It too is alongside the M40.

Detail on the proposal is at lewknorsolarfarm.co.uk.

Solar2 has an online feedback form on the project website https://lewknorsolarfarm.co.uk/feedback. Comments can also be sent to .

Those who may not have internet access or may prefer to write to Solar2, can call 01352 748300 to request a paper version to be posted out to them which will need to be completed and returned in an envelope addressed to ‘FREEPOST Consultation reply’ (no further address or stamp required) by 2 August 2024.

If you have a view on the proposal, please make it known before it’s too late.

Litter Bug Detectives activity trails

Thursday, 18th Jul 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

From Friday 19 July to Sunday 11 August South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils are once again running FREE Litter Bug Detectives activity trails for children across the districts.

Those taking part have a chance to win £20 vouchers for themselves and a rainbow-coloured bench – made from recycled plastic – for their school.

The trails average between 1-2km on marked routes around six local parks and recreation grounds across South Oxfordshire and the Vale. There are 10 stops on each route with questions on waste and recycling. The answers to the questions give letter clues to make up a two-word answer at the end.

The activity is aimed at primary school children (under-12s) to promote recycling and reuse messages and explain the damage litter does to our environment.

Each child, who sends in the correct answer, can request a personalised Litter Bug Detectives certificate. They are also entered into a prize draw – one draw for each council – for £20 vouchers for themselves and a bench for their school.

How to take part

  1. Go to our Litterbug Detectives nature trail webpageand download the trail map of the area you wish to visit. The map will show a trail of 10 stops.
  2. At each stop there will be a question on the theme of waste and recycling. The answers will each provide a letter to make two words.
  3. Email the two-word answer and your name and address and school to before midnight on 30 August and the team will send you a Litter Bug Detective Certificate and enter you for the prize draw. Terms and conditions are on our web page above.

Notes to editors

The trails will be available from 19 July at the following sites:

  • Abingdon
  • Didcot
  • North Hinksey
  • Thame
  • Wallingford
  • Wantage
