New Year’s walk

Thursday, 19th Dec 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

This New Year’s walk is open to all – not just parishioners and ramblers members.

The pace will be leisurely and starts at The Lambert Arms, Aston Rowant. OX49 5SZ at 10.00 am on Sunday 5 January. Please park in the side road by Lambert Arms.

The route will take in Lewknor, Aston Rowant Nature Reserve Bald Hill, Cowleaze Wood, Wormsley Estate, returning down Linkey Hill.

We may stop at the Leathern Bottle, for a drink, snack or a Sunday lunch just before the end of the walk.

I suggest you wear walking boots. Bring a drink and a snack. There’s no need to book for the walk.

No dogs please as there will be sheep in fields.

We will walk at the pace of the slowest and there is a possibility for shortening the route if necessary. It takes in two hills with no stiles. The route was chosen to be least muddy in the area.

Please have ICE details with you on your mobile or in your wallet.

Leader for Aston Rowant Parish Council and Thame and Wheatley Ramblers.

Parish meeting called – 27 December

Thursday, 19th Dec 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

An application for planning permission in principle has been made for a dwelling on a field in Church Lane, Aston Rowant. See https://tinyurl.com/5ye39rza.

The field is well beyond the boundary of the parish, is situated adjacent to a conservation area that protects an historic part of the parish and is on a bridleway, a path that is not a road and which is greatly used by walkers.

The parish council considers this application a risk to the whole parish as it could set a precedent that could see any of the parish’s boundaries extended. The field is large enough to take several houses and could see gaps in this location – and elsewhere – filled in.

The council also considers that the application has been timed to ‘be lost’ at Christmas, giving residents minimal opportunity to notice and to subsequently lodge comments with SODC. The deadline for comments is 4 January and so is before the next regular meeting of the parish council. However, the council has discussed the matter and voted to object to the application.

We request residents attend to understand the application, what it means, and the importance of comments on SODCs planning portal in relation to the application.

The meeting is at 1930hrs on Friday 27 December in Aston Rowant church.

New planning application for Aston Rowant

Tuesday, 17th Dec 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Residents need to know of a planning application (in principle) for a dwelling in a field that will expand the boundary of Aston Rowant in Church Lane. The application will set a bad precedent if granted and could open up the risk of large scale development down a historic lane.

See here.

Comments need to be made before 4 January.

‘Void’ on green in Kingston Blount

Friday, 29th Nov 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

OCC have been attending the Green in Kingston Blount looking to cure an ongoing leak in Brook Street. In trying to clear drains, a ‘void’ of around two feet deep has appeared. This is clearly a hazard.

The council is urgently making contact with the letting agents for the land seeking permission to fix the issue.

Until the void is ‘fixed’, please exercise caution when walking in the area – especially when dark.

The area has been marked by means of cones.

Catch the bus for £1 on Sundays in December

Thursday, 28th Nov 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Cut price bus travel is returning to Oxfordshire next month, in time for the festive period – and passengers can take advantage of the offer for even longer this year.

Single bus fares will be capped at £1 every Sunday in December in Oxfordshire – an improvement on last year’s offer, which only included the Sundays leading up to Christmas.

The December fare cap is one of many measures funded by a £1.9 million government grant in 2023 to improve bus services over two years.

Bus users can also continue to take advantage of the recently introduced MyBus ticket, offering almost unlimited travel on nearly all local services for a fixed daily or weekly rate. More than 100,000 journeys have already been made with the ticket in a little over three months.

Park and ride users can also carry on making savings thanks to the joint parking and bus travel ticket. The ticket, which offers parking for 16 hours plus return bus travel, remains at £4 for a car with one adult or £5 for a car with two adults until April 2025. With both options, up to three children under 16 can travel for free.
