Free and low-cost activities for all ages

Tuesday, 11th Feb 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Fun games, badminton, football and pickleball are just some of the free and low-cost activities available for children and their families to enjoy this February half-term, hosted by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils.

Two free community days are taking place at Long Furlong Community Centre, Abingdon, on Tuesday 18 February and Thame Leisure Centre on Wednesday 19 February. Come along and try a new sport and enjoy a mix of activities for all ages provided by the councils’ Active Communities and Better Leisure teams.

In Abingdon, enjoy fun games, football, seated exercise, and family activities like the Xplorer challenge and New Age Kurling. Over in Thame, take part in football, multisports, dance, seated exercise, table tennis, and much more.

The activities are expected to be very popular so, where required, residents are encouraged to book now to avoid disappointment.

There’s plenty of family fun this half-term at Cornerstone Arts Centre inDidcot, with craft workshops and live theatre for all to enjoy. Children can get creative by decorating their own photo frame on Wednesday 19 February from 11am to midday. Families can enjoy an exciting evening as award-winning magician James Phelan presents his new show, The Dreamer, on Saturday 15 February.

For the Taylor Swift lovers of the family, The Beacon in Wantage is the place to be. The Eras Experience hits The Beacon during half term on Friday 21 February, with a tribute to Taylor Swift’s music.

Garden waste changes

Sunday, 26th Jan 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

SODC is introducing a new permit scheme for garden waste collections this year.

To receive garden waste collections from 1 April 2025, residents must purchase an annual permit. This will replace direct debits.

What residents need to do:

  • From late February, visit the council’s website www.southandvale.gov.uk/GardenWastePermit to make a one-off, annual payment for garden waste collections.
  • When customers get it in the post, they need to stick the permit to the lid of their brown bin.

Garden waste customers can also sign up for an online account on SODCs website to make things easier when they purchase the next permit in 2026. Anyone who cannot easily signup for a permit online can call 01235 422422 for support.

Visit the New Garden Waste FAQ page for more information.

At the Foot of the Hills: history of the parish

Wednesday, 15th Jan 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

In the year 2000 the parish council asked Di Eaton and Jan Gooders to republish a book they’d written a while earlier on the history of the parish.

The original book required much research to uncover local history along with some wonderful images; readers could clearly see that their efforts bore fruit.

As the book is now out of print the authors have given the parish council permission convert and upload the files in downloadable PDF format to this website.

It’s a good read and is available free of charge here.

Problems with SODC planning portal

Monday, 23rd Dec 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

SODC’s planning portal is having problems and has been offline several times over the last week; it was offline again over the weekend and at the time of writing is still offline.

Residents wanting to post comments, in particular in relation to the application in Church Lane, can send an email to quoting P24/S3844/PIP.

The email will be date stamped.

Residents should give SODC a couple of days to upload the comments – longer over the festive period – and then check that comments have been lodged.

New Year’s walk

Thursday, 19th Dec 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

This New Year’s walk is open to all – not just parishioners and ramblers members.

The pace will be leisurely and starts at The Lambert Arms, Aston Rowant. OX49 5SZ at 10.00 am on Sunday 5 January. Please park in the side road by Lambert Arms.

The route will take in Lewknor, Aston Rowant Nature Reserve Bald Hill, Cowleaze Wood, Wormsley Estate, returning down Linkey Hill.

We may stop at the Leathern Bottle, for a drink, snack or a Sunday lunch just before the end of the walk.

I suggest you wear walking boots. Bring a drink and a snack. There’s no need to book for the walk.

No dogs please as there will be sheep in fields.

We will walk at the pace of the slowest and there is a possibility for shortening the route if necessary. It takes in two hills with no stiles. The route was chosen to be least muddy in the area.

Please have ICE details with you on your mobile or in your wallet.

Leader for Aston Rowant Parish Council and Thame and Wheatley Ramblers.

Parish meeting called – 27 December

Thursday, 19th Dec 2024/in News/by Adam Bernstein

An application for planning permission in principle has been made for a dwelling on a field in Church Lane, Aston Rowant. See https://tinyurl.com/5ye39rza.

The field is well beyond the boundary of the parish, is situated adjacent to a conservation area that protects an historic part of the parish and is on a bridleway, a path that is not a road and which is greatly used by walkers.

The parish council considers this application a risk to the whole parish as it could set a precedent that could see any of the parish’s boundaries extended. The field is large enough to take several houses and could see gaps in this location – and elsewhere – filled in.

The council also considers that the application has been timed to ‘be lost’ at Christmas, giving residents minimal opportunity to notice and to subsequently lodge comments with SODC. The deadline for comments is 4 January and so is before the next regular meeting of the parish council. However, the council has discussed the matter and voted to object to the application.

We request residents attend to understand the application, what it means, and the importance of comments on SODCs planning portal in relation to the application.

The meeting is at 1930hrs on Friday 27 December in Aston Rowant church.
