ARCC this weekend

Thursday, 3rd Aug 2023/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Once again we are in the hands of the weather gods and the forecast for weekend is not good.

Whilst the forecast for Friday looks good for junior training, Saturday does not look good. If the weather holds the first team will host Harefield from 11.30 and the third team will host Westbury second team from 12.30.

Saturday will also see the next episode of the monthly Saturday Pay Day Event with the bar open, live music and pizza’s no matter what the weather is – it should be a good night.

Finally and most importantly, the long awaited consultancy meeting to discuss the future of the club development of it’s off field facilities will be on Thursday 24th August at 8pm. More details next week.

Aston Rowant Church clock

Thursday, 3rd Aug 2023/in News/by Adam Bernstein

The clock in the tower of St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Aston Rowant was installed in 1876. Just recently it has become unreliable and is liable to stop without apparent reason so experts in all things to do with time keeping, came to overhaul, clean and inspect the clock.

They dismantled the clock and cleaned all the bearings, the frames and all the moving parts. It was during this cleaning process that damage was found to one of the gear wheels on the escapement drive; the teeth of the gear wheel were badly worn and misshapen, a most unusual fault – see the image below.

Clearly spares are not available so a new gear wheel will have to be made. This means the clock will be stopped for sometime; this should not be an excuse to be late for services.

Cycling challenge – 19 August

Thursday, 3rd Aug 2023/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Sunday 19 August sees 300 riders cycling through the Chilterns, starting in Kingston Blount.

The route is 63 mile loop starting and finishing at the Kingston Blount Estate using a mix of public roads, byways and bridleways in the local area. There will be no road closures or restrictions to other users on the roads or trails during the event although local residents may notice an increase in the number of cars arriving at Kingston Blount Estate during the morning registration period and/or cyclists in the area.

A map showing the route is below.

Playground fence installation complete

Wednesday, 2nd Aug 2023/in News/by Adam Bernstein
We are pleased to say that the first phase of the playground refurbishment project has been completed with the successful installation of the new fence.
We would like to thank George and his team at Ridgeway Rural Services for doing a fantastic job and to users of the playground and surrounding area for their patience and cooperation whilst the work was being conducted earlier this week.
We are keen to deliver the rest of the refurbishment project to the community and have recently released the new playground designs. In order to progress this project to the next stage we still need to raise another £33,000 in addition to the £17,000 raised to date.
We are working hard to raise the remaining funds from grants and through fundraising initiatives but we now need the support of the community to help bridge the gap and bring this project into fruition.
Please donate
For more information on the playground designs and how to donate please see the attached document.
Many thanks,
KBPFCo

Towersey Fringe

Wednesday, 2nd Aug 2023/in Local Events, News/by Adam Bernstein

A note from Towersey Fringe:

“Now in its eighth year, this year’s Towersey Fringe looks set to be the best yet!  This two day event, held on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th August, has become a firm fixture in the local calendar.  It is all held on Towersey Playing Fields, is run entirely by volunteers, and is held to raise money for a new, fantastic sports pavilion and facilities on the Towersey Playing Fields.

Why not have a great laugh by coming along on the Saturday evening to the ticketed comedy event held undercover in a marquee.  This year we are very excited to announce that the headliner is none other than Milton Jones, a regular on Mock the Week, who is making room in his tour schedule to visit Towersey.  You can also see the hysterical Tom Elwes, Leroy Brito and Emman Idama, all brilliantly compered by Cerys Nelmes.

The infamous Fringe Bar will also be open on the evening selling everything from a Pint to a Pimms, and there will be a selection of delicious street food available too if you’d like to make a night of it.

On the Sunday,  the most fantastic day of family fun is held which is free entry, so just pitch up.  Nine local bands will be playing, there is lots of entertainment for children, a silent disco so you can dance like no-one’s watching and a retail village if you fancy a bit of browsing and buying.  A great choice of street food plus our brilliant Fringe Bar are both available to keep you fed and refreshed.  It’s a great day out for the whole family.

Plentiful free parking is available on site, and for tickets to the comedy and information on the event, please visit towerseyfringe.co.uk.  Look forward to seeing you there.”

Waste compliance

Tuesday, 1st Aug 2023/in News/by Adam Bernstein

SODC are warning residents about the risks of illegal waste dumping.

Four bags were dumped at two locations in Sprigs Alley, two more bags at Chinnor Hill and a further two bags on the A40 at Lewknor. SODC’s Envirocrime Team were tipped off and subsequently investigated the four fly tips of garden waste in Chinnor and Lewknor. This culminated in a successful prosecution. The court imposed a fine of £768 and a victim surcharge of £77 and ordered him to pay council costs of £1094.12 totalling £1,939.12. The full story is here: Surrey man pleaded guilty to four fly tips in South Oxfordshire – South Oxfordshire District Council (southoxon.gov.uk)

Residents who see fly-tipping or suspect that someone is involved in fly-tipping can report it via the How to report fly-tipping, littering and dumped waste – South Oxfordshire District Council (southoxon.gov.uk) or call 03000 610610.

Also, if residents are also aware that if they have problems with waste not being collected, or if they notice situations whereby Biffa operatives are putting electrical recycling into general waste trucks (for example), this should be reported directly to Biffa, either by phone on 03000 610610, or at

If the issue continues, it can be escalated to the council’s waste team at  or by calling 01235 422146.
