ARCC news

Thursday, 14th Apr 2022/in News/by Adam Bernstein

A note from the cricket club:

It is almost the start of the cricket season and to start things off with a bang, we are opening the bar on Friday 22nd April which will be the first night of junior training.

Can we remind everyone that membership both playing and social are now due, please go to the website: astonrowantcricketclub.com and follow the instructions on the ‘join now’ tab.

We have two non playing memberships, social (family) membership for £25, and 1881 club membership with the 20 percent bar discount with production of your card. By signing up to membership you will automatically receive the club email updates, normally weekly, which will update you on results, fixtures and any upcoming events.

All current 1881 club cards will have to be renewed before the 20 percent bar discount can be used.

Finally can we thank all the people who responded to the recent questionnaire we included in the Parish Notes. We have had over 60 responses and you can still respond either by filling in the form and returning to the addresses on the form, or electronically via the QR code on the form which is also on the noticeboards in both villages.

Cold Callers

Wednesday, 6th Apr 2022/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Residents are being warned by the police to be cautious of cold callers offering to do driveway, landscaping or roofing work. They also often target consumers by leaflet dropping and creating fake profiles online.

Many traders will be booked up, so the advice is to be wary of traders who can arrive to start the work the following day and push for a quick agreement to use them. Always make sure you receive a final total cost in writing before agreeing to any work starting.

Oxfordshire residents can check the Local Authority’s Buy with Confidence scheme for local traders who have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards.

If anyone believes that they have been the victim of such a rogue trader and wants advice, you can contact the Citizens Advice National Consumer Service on 0800 144 8848 or via its website at Citizens Advice.

The equipment required for the litter pick this weekend has not arrived and so, regrettably, the event set for this weekend is cancelled.

A revised date will be published in due course.

Spring litter pick

Monday, 28th Mar 2022/in News/by Adam Bernstein

The parish spring litter pick is this coming weekend.

Unfortunately, due to a change in SODC policy we will be unable to pick litter on Kingston Hill – new rules do not support litter picking on roads with a 50mph speed limit. This means that in Kingston Blount, we can only pick between the chicanes. Aston Rowant is unaffected by this change.

For those that can help, the timetable is as follows:

Saturday 2nd April. Meet at 10.30hrs  at the bus stop by the Cherry Tree.

Sunday 3rd April. Meet at 10.00hrs in the lay-by on the A40 opposite the Lambert Arms.

Bags and picking tools will be provided. Please wear study shoes and bring gloves. Again, the rules prevent those under 16 helping.

If you can join the pick please let Steven Sowerby know in advance: or 01844 351392.

Information about the £150 energy bills ‘rebate’

Wednesday, 9th Mar 2022/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Thousands of council taxpayers in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse will soon receive a £150 council tax ‘rebate’ to help with rising energy bills.

The government has announced that most households in council tax bands A-D will be eligible for the rebate however, contrary to some reports, the ‘rebate’ will not be taken off people’s council tax bills when they are issued.

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils are putting arrangements in place to make a separate payment to households as soon as possible.  Here’s how the payments will be made:

  • If a household pays their council tax by direct debit – they should be able to receive the £150 directly into their bank account.  South and Vale are hoping to start making these payments by the end of April.
  • If a household is not on direct debit– it will take longer to make these payments as the councils will need to write to them to confirm their bank details.

To ensure the councils can carry out this work as quickly as possible, they are asking people not to contact them to chase the ‘rebate’ payment.

To receive the £150 payment as quickly as possible, residents can still sign up to pay their bill by direct debit – for more information on how to do this, visit southoxon.gov.uk/counciltax or whitehorsedc.gov.uk/counciltax.

Limited funding will also be made available for households in need who would not otherwise be eligible for this energy rebate. This will be a local discretionary scheme and details will be made available on the council’s website in due course.

If you are struggling to pay your council tax bill, please visit southoxon.gov.uk/counciltax or whitehorsedc.gov.uk/counciltax to find out about the support available or call 0345 302 2313 (South) or 0345 302 2315 (Vale).

For advice if you are struggling to pay other bills please visit Citizens Advice website – citizensadvice.org.uk or Vale Community Impact – vci.org.uk
