Anonymous letters

Monday, 1st Sep 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

In recent weeks the parish council has received several anonymous letters with regard to the foliage extending beyond a given property’s boundary in the parish.

The landowner is aware of the issue and has organised contractors to clear the foliage week three of this month.

However, the bigger issue – at least as far the council is concerned – is that the letters were sent to me, as the chairman, anonymously.

I am not a fan of anonymous letters or the like unless someone feels personally at risk or threatened; consequently, if someone has a point of view that they wish to air they should make their comment and be identifiable. It’s worth pointing out that letters received will not be made public.

But by definition of being anonymous these letters cannot be responded to.

I need to state that all correspondence must be sent to the clerk as the ‘proper officer’ of the council – her details are on this website via the ‘contact the council’ tab on the home page.

That’s not to say that residents cannot or should not contact individual councillors informally over matters of concern; but correspondence does need to be sent to the clerk.

As the matter is in hand, and the letters are anonymous, the council will not be taking any action.

Emergency Alert test

Friday, 29th Aug 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

The UK government is testing the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm. Compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert, make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate. You will not need to take any action. The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather. Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency.

Electoral register annual canvass

Friday, 29th Aug 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

SODC is currently carrying out the electoral register annual canvass – that’s the requirement to contact residents each year to ensure they check that their details on the register are up to date.

It has already sent yellow letters to 28,753 households whose details SODC either doesn’t have, or knows are not up to date, asking them to update their information. Around 17,000 households have not responded and so SODC will have sent them a pink reminder on 29 August. Most households, whose details it does have, will shortly receive an email – this will ask them to visit householdresponse.com/southandvale to either confirm ‘no change’ to their record, or to make changes online, if required. More than 135,700 electors (62% of households across the districts) should receive the email.

Anyone who doesn’t respond to it (by 3 October), or who hasn’t registered an email address with SODC, will receive a green letter in October.

The email will go out from Monday 8 September from with the subject line “South & Vale District Councils – Annual Electoral Register Check” and will contain both council logos.

ARCC this weekend

Wednesday, 27th Aug 2025/in News/by Adam Bernstein

It was a mixed weekend for the club over the Bank Holiday. The third team won their game to become League 4 Champions with two games still to play, and the fourth team won to move into their promotion place. All four senior teams won at the weekend, this for the third weekend on the trot as the club looks to finish the league season with a flourish.

Unfortunately, the third team were unable to complete a league and cup double as they lost the Airey Cup Final on Monday.

This weekend, we have the usual Friday night, junior training and bar, and on Saturday we have the first team against Henley which is always one of the highlights of the season, whilst on the bottom field the fourth team host Long Marston.

The second and third teams are away to East Oxford and Oxford and Bletchingdon respectively.

As we move into the last few weeks of the league season the focus of the club moves to the third and fourth teams as they continue to chase their respective promotions. The third team who have already won promotion, but are looking to win their league as a win against Bletchley away, will clinch the league title. The fourth team currently third in their league are at home to Westcott who are second; a win would go a long way to them being promoted.

The first team are away to Banbury where a win would help them to maintain their fourth place which would mean qualification for the National Knockout Cup. The second team host Didcot as they try to consolidate third place in League 1 of the Cherwell League.

On Bank Holiday Monday the third team are playing their League Cup Final against Oxenford at Kingston Bagpuize starting at 1pm.

Next Thursday, the 28th, the club is hosting Oxford over 50’s against a Barbados team. This will be followed by a bar and barbecue; all are welcome and it should be a good night.

Whilst we have the usual junior cricket training on Friday night and league cricket on Saturday, the highlight of the last week has been the club’s progress in cup competitions.
Following the success of the fourth team, who had already reached their cup final, the third team and the midweek T20 teams reached finals this week with wins over Kingston Bagpuize and Shipton under Wychwood respectively.
This weekend the first team are away to Harefield and the third team go to Tetsworth hoping to continue their 100 percent win record. At home we have the second team on the top pitch playing Cumnor first team, and on the bottom field we have the fourth team at home to Wolvercote fourth team.
The fourth team Cup Final is on 17th August against Marston St Lawrence, the third team final is on 25th against Bletchingdon Non Descripts. The T20 is not until 20th September against Horspath. More details as and when we receive them.
