Holiday waste collection dates

Monday, 2nd Dec 2019/in News/by Adam Bernstein

SODC has published the waste and recycling dates for the Christmas period. They are online at http://www.southoxon.gov.uk/services-and-advice/recycling-rubbish-and-waste/your-recycling-and-waste-collections/bank-holiday-co.

Note that the collection dates slip from normal, and between 30 December and 3 January there are no garden waste collections at all.

Heating oil

Saturday, 30th Nov 2019/in News/by Adam Bernstein

There’s an oil syndicate that serves the parish with the sole aim of saving members money on heating oil.

The syndicate covers Aston Rowant, Chinnor Hill, Christmas Common, Crowell, Kingston Blount, Milton Common, Lewknor, Postcombe and Tetsworth – and further if there’s a need.

It costs nothing to join or be a member of and carries no obligation to buy. It runs in November, January/February (depending on the weather) and June.

To illustrate the savings, for the top up in June – the syndicate rate was 45.5p/ litre plus VAT from Watson. However, just buying 500 litres would have cost between 49.95p/litre plus VAT (Sweetfuels) and 54.5p/litre plus VAT (Barton).

To join the syndicate just email your full postal address, phone number and any special access requirements to . 01844 350440.

Interested in getting involved with a passion play next year? If so, go along on Thursday 28th November –  at 19.45 – to Chinnor Community Church, High Street, Chinnor to see the passion play from 2017.

As the church says, “it is an opportunity for everyone to see how they can be involved in the next one. No-one is under any obligation, but to come and see.”

Extra brown bin waste

Friday, 15th Nov 2019/in News/by Adam Bernstein

Just a reminder that, according to SODC, residents across southern Oxfordshire who are signed up for brown bin collections can put out extra garden waste this coming week.

Crews will collect the equivalent of one extra bin’s worth of garden waste (around three large bin bags) during the week commencing 18 November.

Residents should leave their extra garden waste out in bin liners or sacks beside their brown bins on their usual collection day during these weeks. Trade waste bags cannot be accepted.

New salt bins

Tuesday, 12th Nov 2019/in News/by aston_admin

The parish has bought and installed new salt bins, each supplied with gloves and a shovel. One is located by the old telephone exchange in Kingston Blount, the other at the junction of the B4009 and the turn into Aston Rowant. Each will be filled with salt by Oxfordshire County Council. The council would like to politely reminder villagers to replace the gloves and shovel after use.

Two more salt bins for Aston Rowant – one at the bottom of School Lane by the Green and the other at the junction of Aston Gardens where it meets the road – have been bought and will be installed in time.

This new website needs your help with imagery. While we, the council, have created the website in reality it belongs to the whole community and we welcome your help.

There are only two stipulations – that if the images feature a person or someone’s home that you have their permission to use the image, and also, you have the right to use the image.

Recycling matters

Sunday, 10th Nov 2019/in News/by aston_admin

A recent visit to the Ardley energy from waste plant by one of your councillors – it’s where our black bin waste is sent – proved interesting. In essence, the plant receives some 300,000 tons of waste that instead of going to landfill is burnt and turned into 27Mw of electricity – enough to power 56,000 homes. Only 5% of the residue is sent to landfill as the ash is used in road building and the metals reclaimed; the only emission is water vapour.

The key takeaway from the plant operator is this: If there’s any doubt over the recyclability of an item, put it into the black bin so that it can be burnt with electricity being created. The wrong item in a green bin could mean that a whole load of recyclables will be rejected at the recycling plant in London. It will then have to be collected and sent at extra cost to Ardley… costing all of us more.
